Students help me raise and care for a diamondback terrapin this year. We work with the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Port of Baltimore, and Dr Rosenthal at Ohio State University. Throughout the year, we study the terrapin and the Chesapeake Bay. We weigh and measure the terrapin regularly and chart the growth. Finally, a group of students went with me to Poplar Island to release the terrapin. Poplar Island is a wildlife refuge in the Chesapeake Bay that is being restored using dredge material from the shipping channel leading to the Port of Baltimore. Through cooperation between multiple economic and environmental agencies, Poplar Island is thriving as a habitat for many native birds, and other wildlife.
